Hello everyone,

One of the woofers on my old classic JBL 4401 monitors recently gave up. After a phone call to my local JBL rep, who contacted JBL directly, I was informed that woofer retrofit kits for the 4401's do not exist. There is a reconing kit that sells for 114$ CAD per woofer, excluding labor, but I believe it would be best to just get new monitors, actives.

In this case, I am looking at a pair of active monitors in the sub-1000$ CAD range ($806.19 USD). So far the KRK V6's, KRK RP6, Tannoy Reveals, Whaferdale actives all interest me. I wish I could afford Genelecs or Dyn's but I don't believe I can.

I am not interested in anything by Behringer, Event, M-Audio, Yorkville or Yamaha.

Any ideas?!

From that list', I'd probably prefer the unpowered Tannoy Reveals and a decent amp, like a used little Adcom, Parasound, or Hafler.

The powere Reveals, IMO, obviously run out of juice on the bottom pretty quickly. I just think they're underpowered.

While I like the idea of active monitors in theory, and if you spend enough on them it seems to be a design approach that can produce more accurate monitors, I just have a tough time believing the cheapies have amps that are even approaching reasonable inside, and if they don't, you're stuck.

I still think the ultimate sub- $800 solution is one of the above amps and the best sounding hifi speakers you can find, NHT Super One being my personal favorite.
