Ribbon tweeter and the rest...

What could be the best affordable ribbon tweeter, in the 50/200$ range. I like the sound coming out of them!

After that I would match a 5 or 6 inches (maybe 8") woofer (two way passive) with the matching sensivity and a complementing frequency range for easy "Xovering".

The goal is to make a compact/good sounding surround sound system with a good dispertion.

This is for a DY project.

Finally a powered sub (12 inches, in the 200$ range). For this I need a fast woofer, goin' loooowwww.(I have a Crown DC-300 collecting the dust!) But for this sub/satellite I would go electronic Xover.

This can be a long project. I've done some passive Xovers with 10 and 12 gauge air core coils, so I know how to make them(I have to find back the coil machine!).

I know that this is not an easy task but I'm ready to make reasearches for this project.

Any expert suggestions on this is appreciated :)

Serge,

Welcome!

Stretching the top of your price range there is the Raven R1. http://www.zalytron.com/ or the ESg2 http://www.e-speakers.com/products/ESg-ribbon.html - the ESg2 being more appropriate for a nearfield monitor since it's magnetically shielded.

Baring these, I'd say the Hi-Vi RT1C-A http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdet ... -400&DID=7 or the RT2E-A http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdet ... -405&DID=7 would be good choices. These aren't true ribbon tweeters, but they're reasonably good compromises.

In all cases, however, a ribbon type driver is not a good choice for a beginner. Crossover design requires very special attention in order to either protect the ribbon from damage, correct for directional response characteristics, or both.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks for the reply.

Does exists a software to calculate passive Xovers from speaker specs (data litteratures or other means of measurements) and installations ex.: ofset front panels for the tweeter (to properly align the coils).

Thanks for the infos.
