they have this rubber roofing stuff at menards that i noticed. it comes in a huge roll and is fairly inexpensive. i think it's about 1/8 " thick. anyone heard of this stuff and know if it would be useable as a substitute for sheetblok.

Straight question. What makes you think sheetblok etc is cost effective at all? The best tested value is gypsum wallboard.

Only part I am using a rubber membrane for is the floor. Good old GAF TriPly 4 ($40 a roll 36"x10") between the 2 subfloor layers.

Check out these guys - I bought 1620 square feet (that's 6 rolls that measure 54" x 60 ft) for $810 total, and then it cost $235 to ship it to Chicago - You will need a loading dock and fork lift - a roll of this stuff is incredibly heavy.
I was emailing every website with this stuff and got quotes from $2000 to $4000 - and then I wised up and emailed all my sheet rubber vendors here at work - I saved a ton of money, but from what I am reading here, extra drywall would have been less expensive..
