Spray foam gap sealant that I can use with floating walls?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Spray foam gap sealant that I can use with floating walls?

Post by mbira »

I'm in the process of building walls inside a studio/control room that is in a metal commercial building. It is metal studs and I'm using whisper clips and hat channels, doubled 5/8" sheetrock with green glue in between the sheets.

There are still several gaps that I need to navigate where the metal beams are running along the metal roof: I-beams, purlins, and other things like that that give me places where I have gaps up to a few inches wide that I need to fill. For normal construction, you can use that foam spray sealant that you can find in the cans, but I'm concerned that stuff is going to cause the floating walls to be coupled to the rest of the building and I'll lose the benefits of all the work I've put in.

Can anyone recommend what I should use to fill these large gaps? Thanks!

Can you please give me more information about your build please.

Don't, under any circumstances use the foam from spray cans.

cheers

It looks like green glue recommends backer rod in bigger gaps to fill them and then their sealant. I'll do that.

Green Glue sealant is brutal. It shrinks and cracks very badly. I'd recommend using a different caulk. Where I live, Dynaflex 230 is very cheap and works great.

It appears that you've made the mistake most people do. You started building without consulting this forum.
