Minimum slot width

Post by vesalaasanen »

Hi there,

Is there any minimum slot width for slat resonator? What happens if the gap is for example 1mm? I have a ceiling that is going to be built out of 95x15mm wood. The ceiling is angled and there is 30-80cm space behind with lots of cotton wool. I would like the ceiling to affect the 38Hz room mode as much as possible. However, looking at the simulation the gap should be just 1-2mm wide to get the maximum effect. Are there any problems using a gap this small?

Link to simulation with slats with 2mm gap vs. no slats. The absorption coefficient gets about 0.15 better with slats:

I would not try to hit a 38Hz mode with a slot resonator: Slots are good for the mid and low-mid range, but not so much for the low end. If you are going after a specific modal issue, and do not have any other low-end issues, then I'd suggest going with a panel trap (membrane trap). You can tune those fairly low with good results.
