New space - studio in Athens

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

wow, these are really close!
you tested that and they dont touch each other when they re on the move?
I mean, maybe its the photo, but they seem like they are just 1-2cm apart..

Hangers don't move much in use! They vibrate a little, but the don't really move. As long as there's a small air gap between them, that's fine.

I see.
So I can squeeze as many as I can inside there!
I will make the calculations and post a detailed plan and sketch for the thickness, air gap, angles!
Thanks!

Hangers final plan

Post by almaelectronix »

I designed the hangers plan on 10:1 scale and I finally came up with this:
working hangs.jpg
This one will probably work better than the other plans I tried because I will have 34 hangers in total and 10 of them are wider than 60cm.

These are the other (not preferable) plans I tried:
Untitled-1c.jpg
The upper plan can also have 34 hangers but only 6 are wider than 60cm.
The lower plan can only have 28 hangers and 8 of them are wider than 60cm.

I would go with the middle one (the one you liked least!) It has the best coverage in the corners, where it is needed most, with the highest number and greatest volume of insulation, the flat angle allows you to get more hangers in that area, there's good variation in hanger size, good angles with respect to the speakers, easier to build, etc, etc. Second best would be the bottom option.

Ok, then, I will do the middle option :D
There was a mistake on air gaps so I rearranged the middle plan a bit.

I added one more flat hanger on corner and one small angled on midpoint.
Same thing, 34 hangers in total:
8 pieces of 18-50cm,
16 pieces of 60cm,
10 pieces of 63-76cm,

All hangers will be 3.60m high.
That will be 10cm insulation on floor, 10cm on ceiling, 2cm air gap each side
and 10cm for the hanging construction (wood, string ,etc)

Hi all!
There is some progress in my room.

I started converting the front vertical corners, from the corner insulation rolls I previously had, to superchunk style bass traps, in order to add more insulation for lower frequencies.

I built the frame that will support the insulation's weight as it goes up to 4 meters high ceiling.

Triangles will be 1x1x1.4meters and both traps will cover an area of 4 cubic meters in total.

Here are the photos from the progress so far.

insulation added!

knauf ecose for the triangles, 1m long are the sides of the triangles, 1.4m long is the face, about 75cm deep, GFR of 5kpas/m2.

Right in front of the chunks I will add rockwool panels 1cm thick, GFR 49kpas/m2, to add a membrane effect which will help the traps work lower (Boggy's method).

After testing probably plastic membrane and finally fabric.

That looks pretty good! And I bet you can hear the change in the acoustic response! It must sound rather different in there, now.

True, you can hear the difference even without testing. These guys are huge!

Going for the back wall soon!

Started the backwall hangers project.

But before getting there I had a lot of things to take care of..

I removed the old and installed the new soundproofing door on the backwall. that was a hard one.. required modification of the wall-reinforcement of the door's perimeter with (metalic core filled with cement) studs and joist, to support door's weight. The door's frame was filled with 60kg sand. carefully filled all the gaps and seams, paint and installed contact rubbers for air tight closing.

Closed the old window using double brick walls and placed the two ventilation openings, one for clean air and the other for taking the old out.

Removed the insulation rolls from all back corners, horizontal and vertical.

Prepared all the wirings for power, lights(wireless remote switch), ventilation motor (wireless too), that will all be hidden behind the hangers once they are in place.

And finally started lining the walls with rockwool.

Going from this:

To this:

And this for now:

Seems kind of simple but inbetween all these happened:

Before proceeding with the "back wall hangers" project, I had to construct a box to isolate the ventilation from the rest.

This way I can attach the soundproofing boxes of the ventilation out of the back false wall (inside room) and save space for the hangers.

Some details left to do, like filling the gaps, cut some useless little pieces, add silicone.

So here it is (part 1):
