So I'm soon going to start construction on the cottage studio. I'm getting ready to order from Redco some panels. I have to have all this stuff rearranged before we put up the walls of course. I'm using 4 Metric Halo ULN-8s and a ULN-2. I'll also be using Millennia HV-3 D 8 channels box. There is a control room, Tracking room and an iso room, which is next to the garage. Maybe push comes to shove we might have occasion to through someone out there too.

Here's what I'm looking at: a wall panel in the tracking room (TR) and Iso booth (ISO). The wall panel will just be Dsub connectors. The TR will four or maybe a 5th; 3 Mics for 16-24, one for phones and maybe one for line? The ISO will have two: Mics and phones.

Then I'll have the modular input boxes https://www.redco.com/REDCO-16ch-XLR-Ds ... t-Box.html. I can move these from room to room, as needed. One 16 XLR-Dsub and 2 8 XLR. Maybe another one for just line inputs. And each room will have one additional box each Female TRS for Phones. UNless someone can tell me this is a mess, I'm excited about this modular approach.

But what has me stumped is midi. Mostly midi instruments will be in the control room, but I can definitely see where we'd all want to track in the same room. I have an old Yamaha KX-88 keyboard controller that uses midi. How do I patch midi in and out?

I'm having Redco build me a patch-bay on the CR, but haven't figured out all the exact ins and outs yet. But these essential elements are to start. This isn't going to change.

And what about USB? I think I’d need to get midi and USB into the tracking room. Right? How?

MIDI can often be run over very long distances without any problems. You might be able to just run it down a snake line. Try it out. If it doesn't work, you might want to throw something active from http://midisolutions.com/products.htm inline.
For USB, there are several solutions out there that you can find with a simple google search. A lot are even wireless.

Cat5 as one means. I can do an ethernet -> USB. There's a midi to XLR converter cable I'll use.
