How does putting the driver in a box affect freq. response?

The context is I am building a DIY Auratone clone from donated parts and I have a few options.

I have found the SPL and waterfall charts for the original Auratones or one of the models. Fairly flat between 200Hz and 7kHz and then roll off.

These are graphs for the two drivers that I have been given, one is 6.5" and the other is 5" - the right kind of size for a mixcube. NB these tests are just with the drivers sitting out on the desk - no speaker box at all.
I am wondering how the box affects things. I am hoping it will boost the 200-1000 Hz region. I would rather use the 5" driver if possible as I don't want the box to be too big.

Eric Best is probably the right guy to answer that in detail for you. I hope he sees your post. Speaker cabinet design is a little more complicated that you are imaging right now!

Do you know what the speakers are?
The boxes will increase the bass response by a lot!

I have some info on the larger driver, but I've found nothing on the smaller one.
Larger 6.5" driver: Visaton FR 16 WP 4ohm 60/80W 60-15,000 Hz (

Smaller 5" driver: Has "F52C-D097 14101" written on back, that's all I know.
I'm not expecting the earth. I may buy an Avantone MixCube when I have the budget. This can stand in til then. Even if it just references what smaller headphones and laptops are hearing that will be good.
I will follow the design in the first link in 1st post.

I couldn't find any info on the first one. It will perform better in a box, but without measurements you kind of have a crap shoot on what size to use. Try a box about 6" x 7.5" and 5.5" deep.
The visaton is water resistant so you can mix in your hot tub!

Ha, yes that could work. Would deal with any room problems too by mixing outdoors!
