So I'm doing a new build of a garage/shed in my backyard. 15x23' is the building size, with a shed style roof. I'll include a sketch of it below. I'm looking for advice on design and layout of the space.
Just for a little background on me, I've mostly worked in open space style studios (think Lanois' theatre, NOLA mansion...), where my control space is sometimes right beside the drummer. Not ideal for checking tones on the fly, but as a producer, I love being right in the thick of the performance. So I actually prefer having an "open space" type layout. Not a conventional recording studio layout.
Here are details and questions:
1. There will be plumbing run to the space for a 2-piece bathroom. I don't think I'll need a little kitchenette, it would take too much space.
2. Windows. The windows in the sketch have not been finalized. I'd love some natural light coming in, so I'm trying to decide on proper positioning of these windows before we build. Any other suggestions? I'd like them on that high wall, to keep folks from being able to look in.
3. The music produced in there will mostly be folk, rock (leaning towards "classic"), jazz, funk, experimental, improv. I don't foresee much extremely loud music, but guitar amps will be cranked at times and drums will be beaten pretty hard at times. For the most part, the studio will be used for 40% tracking, 60% mixing/mastering.
4. I'd like to build a multi purpose space with modular walls. So it could be wide open, or with the use of a modular system, be split into 2 larger rooms, with 1 "booth" style smaller room. Any advice on this? Should I do a combination of permanent walls and modular? Maybe the booth should be built permanently, and have the option of a 1 wall split using a modular wall? I'd love to hear your input on this. I've been in a modular wall style studio before, and it was constructed beautifully and had great sound separation.
5. Do you recommend a wall being built to the right, when you enter the building? This wall could separate the entrance from the studio, and could connect to the bathroom and some storage space on the opposite side of the space, directly in front of you as you enter the building.
6. I want to use every inch of this space wisely, including storage ideas. I don't mind storage being up high in shelves, or in a small room.... I don't mind a "busy" look in the studio.
Any advice would be great. I'd like to use this thread to document the building of the shed, and the studio.
