REW is not only free, it's also among the best, at any price. You download it from Home Theater Shack: You have to register, but that is free too.

You need a proper acoustic measurement mic. It has to have very flat response, it has to be an omni, and it has to be low noise. And accurate. And have good dynamic range.

Good mics:
- Presonus PRM1
- DBX RTA-M
- Audix TM1
- Beyerdynamic MM1

If you want to spend a lot of money, try an Earthworks or NTI. And if you REALLY want to spend a lot of money for the best out there, try a B&K. On the other end, if you want a cheap one that still gives reasonably acceptable results, try a Behringer ECM8000.

You will also need a good sound level meter to calibrate your system, before you can take accurate measurements.

I second that. REW is the 'one' as they said in the Matrix.
