Hi Team

Building work has at long last started on my studio MK2 so glad I waited, as I have functioned for 3 years in an upstairs room with an isolation room within the area that is basically a control room 16 foot by 17 ft 6.

I am now moving downstairs to the Garage that is the same size room.

I am raising the floor to meet with building regs so do not want to loose anymore height I am 6ft 6 n only going to have a foot or so above me..

Has anyone had any experience of bass trapping the ceiling between joists, did you use panel absorption or just bass traps. I have also worked out some diffusion calcs in the same space any thoughts of how this may work using a skyline diffusor.

Sounds strange... Why would you need to raise the floor? What type of floor is down there already, and what reason did they give you for needing to raise it? Surely, if it was a garage it already had an approved floor...

I doubt that there would be enough space between joists for bass trapping. Bass traps need to be very deep: 20 to 30 inches, if possible. Unless you have massively deep joists up there, you just won't have enough room to do much. That's not to say that it isn't a good idea to fill them with insulation! It sure is! But it won't be bass trapping: just general mid and high absorption, which is always a good thing.

I'm not sure what you mean there: Panel absorbers ARE bass traps! That's like asking "Did you use water, or just melted ice?". It's the exact same thing. Panel absorbers only work for bass frequencies, so by definition they are bass traps.

Diffusion on the ceiling with a 7'6 ceiling? Why would you even want to do that? You already mentioned that you are tall, and your head would be just inches away from any such diffusion... right in the middle of all the lobing, timing and phasing issues associated with skyline diffusers! Not a good place to have your ears.... The general recommendation is that you needs at least 10 feet of straight-line distance between your ears and any type of numeric-sequence diffuser, an possibly more if it is tune low. You might need three times the wavelength of the low cut-off frequency, if that happens to be longer than ten feet.

It would really help if you could post a detailed diagram of the room, and a description of the purpose of the room, plus photos. There isn't enough info to go on here.
