MIxing/Mastering studio design (Cali, Colombia)

Post by pcmusicpro »

Hello to all, it´s very nice to be here again. I´m writing this post in order to get some advise about my actual mixing room construction. It presents some challenges which I want to address the best I can.

The space is a garage room 3.20m wide x 4.44 long and 2.34 high. I know that the space is a little small for my main purpose which is mixing and mastering and doing some home theater 5.1 mixes, but it´s the only place I can use so I hope to make it the best possible.

I already did the isolation of the walls and ceiling with double layer of gypsum board and the cavity filled with 3.5" of fiberglass. No more than 90 to 100 dB SPL will be generated inside. The structural walls of the place are 15cm thick. I think I will not have big problems regarding isolation, the street noise has an average of 50 to 60 dBC SPL and inside the isolated room with the door open (I haven´t build yet the studio door) the noise floor is around 47 dBC (which will be less when completely sealed).

Ok right now my main concern is how much low frequency control should I have. Being the small size of my room I think I have to build some good bass traps and address the bass energy with different methods incluiding bass traping in the corners via absorption, Helmhotz resonators in the wall in order to break paralelism too and maybe some diffusion in the back wall.

After the isolation the actual working area is: 3m wide x 4.34m long x 2.24m high. Inside that space I have to build the acoustic treatment. I will use pine wood stems for the framing, 3.5" thick soft fiberglass and 1" thick rigid fibergalss (kind of 703). All covered with clothing.

Here are some pics with descriptions.

All the acoustic treatment will be done from floor to ceiling covering the front wall area and sides (kind of a LEDE design)

Ok so here are my questions:

1) What do you think of the design? how can I improve it?
2) I have doubts about the area covered with Helmholtz resonators which is 2.60m in both walls (20cm in their widest end and 6cm in the smallest end). My question is which range of frequencies should I treat with the resonators?

I´ll post a pic with the axial modes of the room.

3) What kind of treatment should I do in the back wall and the ceiling. Absorption or diffusion?

Ok thanks for the input. If I´m doing something wrong regarding de Forum rules let me know, maybe I´m missing something.

Hello to all

I started the framing for the acoustic panels. In the next pic is the frame of the right corner bass trap, right now I´m doing the left one.

I have some doubts about the size of the Helmholtz resonators I should build next and that will be placed in the lateral walls. Any hints will be really appreciated because I need to continue my building and I don´t want to go to the next step without some advise.

I´m looking at other posts and I understand the basics of panel building, but I´ve never done resonators before and I feel insecure about the best way to build them.

Please give me some help.

Thank you.
