We are thinking of purchasing an Allen & Heath QU16 for the home studio and can also double up for the PA when the band do there own gigs,

has anybody any advice or a similar priced option for a home studio mixer ?

Are you planning to record live drums in your studio along with something else at the same time? If so, then 16 channels might not be enough. I often use ten channels on drums alone. Add another 4 or 5 for an electric guitar, and you are out of channels.... Not sure how you record, but for me I can't do with less than about 24 channels if I'm doing drums plus something else.... For live work too I'd be short with 16 channels, even if I only use four for the drums (Eg. Recorderman style), unless it is a very small group.

Now, as far as Allen & Heath goes, they are great consoles. The EQ has a nice clean sound to it, the pre-amps are decent, and the consoles are robust, so from that point of view, you have picked a good brand. I spec'd a Z428 for a church consulting job I did recently, and they are very happy with it: It might be an option for you too. (although that's analog, not digital...) Maybe the QU-24?
