hi all,

I am rethinking the bass trapping for my control room and I am curios on a behavior of a system that utilizes absorbers placed over the deep bass trap. I saw that on a photograph of Ethan Winer home studio but couldn't find any exact info elsewhere.

Is there any impact on performance of a bass trap?
What about spacing btw the back of absorber and plywood surface of a bass trap?
Any more thoughts on this?

I'm not sure I understand the question: bass traps ARE absorbers. If you put more absorption on the front of a bass trap,, what you have done is to make the bass trap deeper, and therefore more effective down to lower frequencies.

What about spacing btw the back of absorber and plywood surface of a bass trap?

Now I'm even more confused! Bass traps do not have plywood surfaces. Panel traps might have plywood surfaces, but the typical broadband bass traps that small studios need, are pure absorption. Panel traps are tuned devices, might be used to treat specific modal issues, but they are not really bass traps, in the normal sense of the term.

Hi d2k,

The design and performance of any lower frequency sound absorbing device is a function of frequency vs. space. What frequency do you need to absorb and how much and what is the location of the space you have to contribute to that task. All of these issues must first be addressed.

There are three main types of low frequency absorbers: diaphragmatic, membrane, and Helmholtz. You will need to choose the one that addresses frequency, space requirements, and unit's location within your room.

What frequencies are causing you concern within your room?

Four types, actually: Porous absorption. And if you count hangers, then that would be five types. And if you wanted to consider active electronic absorption, that would make six...
