DIY subwoofer suggestions

Post by ToneAlive »

Hey everyone, I have gotten pretty handy with the carpentry as a resut of building my studio.. And I need a subwoofer, or maybe two to go with my JBL 4410A soffit mounted speakers. I was considering checking out some reasonably priced subwoofer drivers to use for a diy subwoofer. Anyone have any suggestions for a good driver? I am ok with used. Not sure if I would want to build the speaker box as an air tight box or a ported design. I suppose different drivers are made for different designs? ..I'm just starting out this research process. Any thoughts? Oh, and I have a rack mounted crossover already. Thanks!

Eric Best and Barefoot would be the guys here on the forum who would be able to help you most with that. I hope they are around! Speaker design is a complicated science and art (and a bit of voodoo too, I think!) that takes a lot of dedication to learn. They are the guys to give you advice on how to go about it.

Hey Tone, unfortunately I'm not much on subwoofers. You might be able to get more info here http://techtalk.parts-express.com/

Here are some of my favorite resources:

http://www.avsforum.com/f/155/diy-speakers-and-subs

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/diy-subwoofers/

and the best of all if you have adjacent attic or unused space...

http://ibsubwoofers.com/

and

http://ibsubwoofers.proboards.com/

Someone at one of the forums will be able to recommend you a particular driver and design for your application. Or I can help you here if you like! There are many good drivers in the $200-300 range. Good luck!
