New basement construction questions

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

New basement construction questions

Post by Teddy »

Hi!!
I'm going to start building in my basement, however I have a few questions before starting. How well would it work if I built sheet rock walls down to my cement floor using throw carpets to move around for sound adjustment? I also thought about using 2-walls for all construction :) stuffed with mineral wool for the studio and control room. Is it ok to have the studio and control room on the same cement floor? If I do build walls to the floor how would you recommend running power and cables? I have a pretty dry basement (do I need to worry about moisture issues)? Also, I don't have much headroom and HVAC ducts that need to be covered with something. Thanks for any help provided!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much height do you have in the basement?

As far as running cables and power, I decided to float a floor (which most people don't do in a basement. For the details of what I did, click here: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=839

As far as moisture in the basement...use a dehumidifier.

There is also a lot of good info here on this thread: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=598

Both of the links will give some great detail and drawings on what you want to do on wall construction and floor construction. If you're limited on space, you can still do a floating floor, but turn the 2x4's on their side instead. The electrical, you can run through conduit surface mounted inside the control room so you don't have to penetrate the walls w/ boxes.

If you need some ideas on layouts, etc. Draw a drawing of your dimensions and obstacles and post a thread under the design forum. They will be able to give you some suggestions there as well.

Another possibility is (if you plan on doing drums) is just build one area in the live room that is floated ( a riser so to speak), to reduce sound transmission through the floor.
