RC on both walls??

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

RC on both walls??

Post by mcguin »

hi all
I have built double wood stud walls (with 5 to 8 inches between walls) throughout the studio - should I be using RC on both of the walls - I am putting 3 layers of drywall on each wall.

thanks

You want to put the RC only on one side of a double leaf system.

Check the sticky "Complete Section". There should be some detailed info there.

At the risk of getting my butt verbally kicked by Steve, I don't know why he isn't responding to this, other than the fact he is the hardest working person I know of, but I just read his response on another forum, to which he emphatically "recommends" NOT using RC on a double wall.
Steve, excuse me, I came here today to keep up with your recommendations as I value them, not to second handedly pass your word to people seeking your advice. And I have no intention of pre empting any response you feel necessary here, as this is your territory, but I came here tonight to specificly research this issue on the stickys, as I am absolutely sure I read and saw a USG illustration on STC rating walls, whereby one of the highest rated assemblys was a 2 wall, 2 leaf system with one of the 2 leaves on RC. Maybe I'm wrong, and I totally searched my bookmarks tonight, but to no avail. I'm sure you are correct, but I have to prove to myself that Alzheimers is definetly setting in.
So I'll leave it at that, just in case you are up to your neck in gators, but if I do find what I was searching for....I'll be back:P If not, I'll still be back, if only to thank you again for your insight.

It's not that RC will cause problems when used on one side of a double-framed wall (as in, layers of wallboard/studs/gap/studs/layers of wallboard) it's just that it isn't necessary when using separate frames. I don't have a ready reference to back this up, but my thoughts on this go to stiffness of the two walls - increased stiffness improves low end TL, so if the RC doesn't help mids and highs with separate frames, and it only worsens low frequency response, and it costs money and is a PITA to install, then screw it (but not on your double framed walls, unless you're just a masochist)

Instead of using RC on separate frames, I would just move the inner frame another 1/2" away from the outer frame - the extra air space will help more than the RC, and the finished wall surface would be at the same location... Steve
