Hey folks,
My Situation: I'm currently using a room in my house as a semi-treated recording and mixing room. I have put a fair amount of acoustic treatments in the room to manage bass and reflection issues. I have a large picture window in which I recently had a double pane unit installed (for insulation reasons, not acoustics). Now I find that the whole window resonates at an audible frequency. I dont track a lot of loud sources in this room, but even a reasonably loud vocal can get it ringing quite audibly.
My Question: Does anyone know of a material that could be applied to the interior facing glass pane (preferably non-permanent) that would have enough mass to damp this resonance? I was thinking of some of the vinyl films that get applied for tinting, but without the tint and maybe with more mass? I cant find anything online and I thought you crafty DIY'ers might have a good idea.
Thanks,
Weezie

Re: Damping resonance in a large dbl pane window
If applicable: Heavy embedding in butyl bead or plumbers mastic at the edges which is traditional better than rubber seals. By doing so you improve edge damping. Glas-modes or waves in the plates reflect back from these the edges (modal behavior which as well occurs in these windowpanes as free in rooms, but the idea is comparable).
Further such foils aren't a bad idea. Every bit can help somewhat. The worse something is the faster you get your first gain.

Re: Damping resonance in a large dbl pane window
Thanks for the advice Eric. I am thinking that I should have someone (maybe the people who installed it?) out to look at the installation. Perhaps they can add extra bead while they have the trim off. I find it odd that I have many similar windows in my house and this one is much more resonant than the others...by far. I may also look into a tempered IGU instead of the regular one in there. I understand that they occlude more noise, so it stands that they would be less resonant as well.
