Search function needs improvement

Hi John!

It's really a blessing that this site exists in the web, where such a lot of experts share their knowledge. I really understand that always answering the same questions must be annoying, instead that the people use the already existing information in the posts.

I think a really big reason for always being asked the same is, that the search function is not very ideal. Most newbys would like to search for construction of doors, inside out walls, soffit mount speakers, etc. but the search function can't be used with those keywords, because those are used too often in the posts.

Is there a possibilty to improve that? It would help me and I think a lot of other people trying to gain information and educating theirselfes and besides probably you and your experts will have to spend less time on the "basic" questions.

Anyway, many thanks for each single word on this side, it can't be balanced with gold.
Best regards,
Edi

Edi - at the top of the forum is a welcome thread

WELCOME TO RECORDING STUDIO DESIGN

It's IMPORTANT that you read this if you hope to gain any help on this site!!!

http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... =17&t=7572

the first thing it suggests is you read the recording manual.

if you click on index you get this

Hi John!

I have already read those articles before I postet this one and I can't find the point where I missed something in this post, so I could get an answer?

It's just my opinion that it is not easy to find posts of interest by using the search functionality.
Sometimes it helps to see different drawings for the same thing, so it would be nice if you could search for e.g. door construction and see how different people did.

Currently that's not possible so I wanted to ask if there is a possibility to improve it or any hints how to find such terms.

Thanks,
Edi

Edi, I sometimes search the site using google. In the google search box type site:johnlsayers.com "door construction" and you should get the results you're after.

Hope this helps

Steve

Hi John!

It was just a thought to increase the number of common words in the search. If it's not possible, I live with it, it's a great site anyway.

@Sparky:
Thanks for the tip!
I will try that!

Best regards,
Edi

Maybe we could upgrade to vBulletin. John?
Its a paid forum, but its the best one (Gearslutz use it for example)
Perhaps we could do a group cuote and buy it. anyway its for us
I can help you install it and everything , plus, there SHOULD be a way to export this forum's users and posts to vbulletin's platform. Plus, It doesnt have any spam issues.

PM me if you'll consider it John. I'll gladly help

EDIT: I checked and vBulletin comes with import options for other forum softwares
It costs $200 us.
If 20 members puts 10 bucks, we can do it :)

I would love to see a change to gearslutz type forum,
I have been having a nightmare trawling through acres of search results here,
trying to gleam needles from haystacks, hell i would nearly pay 200 quid myself to see this happen.
I for one have no problem coughing up a tenner!!!!
Could you imagine if the manual from Logic pro had no index!!!
I have had this problem for ages here and didnt want to mention it (seem ungratefull etc)
but now that the cats out of the bag.....
peace and respect (but updater too!!!)

I checked out Gearslutz search functions - in what way is it different? It appears to have the same options we have.

It's not so much the options, John, as the words that are considered to be "common", and are therefore ignored by the search engine. If you could remove those restrictions, or just relax them somewhat so that far fewer words are ignored, I think it would make a big difference. Sometimes I get very frustrated looking for a thread I know is here somewhere, but every time I put in a phrase that I'm sure was in the thread, the search engine tells me that the words I used are common, and it doesn't search for them.

The spam is near zero. Its a much unbreakable system.
You can install different add-ons, like videos, etc.
Its a better system overall.

I'm still available to help install it and everything if you decide so.

besides the spam and the obnoxious present of jbasinno :D , I don't have a problem at all with this PHP board insertion. I love phpBB, it looks more pro than the other mentioned. Perhaps it's the set-up they are using, but I never been a fan of the GS board they use. Therefor: all who are in favorite of this forum, rise your hands :)

But, John, if yer upgrading and need support, count me in.
