sub panel vs 2 circuits from main

Post by cporro »

i'm planning for my electrical. i've read a bit but still find myself confused. my plan is for 2 circuits in my studio.

option one is to run 2 circuits from the main panel. each from their own leg.

option 2 is to run a sub panel from the main. from what i can tell the sub is fed off both legs from the main. and the sub ground runs back to the main panel ground. the sub is just a way of getting more space for breakers and perhaps more convenience (don't have to run to main panel).

so as far as i can tell the grounding goes back to the main panel in either case. whatever noise there is would be the same either way. yeah? and either way i'd still be able to run gear on one leg and non-gear off the other. yeah?

about amps...
if a 15A circuit can carry around 1400watts safely. would i ever need more then 15A for gear? that's 14 marshall stacks. i have a few smaller amps, computer, maybe 10 pieces rack gear, monitors, 450 watt PA speaker...

and while i'm at it is there a good book on electrical? i have a home wiring book by home depot. but it's not heavy on explaining how things work. more about doing it.

thanks
