Here is a rough run down of what is getting plugged in at this studio:

Since there could be more things plugged into each room that I'm not thinking of, then I would think I would need 2 circuit breakers for both rooms since 16amps for a 20amp breaker seems to be the limit. I could do the following:

CR B1=20amp B2=20amp
TR B3=20amp B4=20amp

I could also add a 15 amp breaker for the Lights.

Lights B5=15amp

I am going to use Star Grounding. From all the research I have done on this site, the BILTP book, internet, library books etc..... I thought conduit would be the best thing to keep things neat with the isolated grounds.

Here is my wiring plan.

12gauge wire for all outlets
14gauge wire for all lights

6 outlets for the CR (2 quads under the mixing board)-->3black+3white+ 6IGR=12 wires running in the main 1" conduit
4 outlets for the TR-->2Black+2White+4IGR=8 wires running in the main 1" conduit
20 wires total running in the main 1" conduit

The lights I might be better off with just romex 14-2.
2 overhead boxes for track lights in CR
2 overhead boxes for track lights in TR
2 switches-->2 tracks CR
2 switches-->2 tracks TR

Code: Select all

[Outlets]-----<1/2" conduit>----<1" conduit>----[Junction Box]--<1/2" conduit>--<10 IGRs>--[Ground Panel]
                                                        | |
                                                        | |
                                                        | |----[Ground Rod]
                                                        | |
                                                        |-----------<1" conduit>--------[Panel]
                                                                                          |
                                                                                          |
                                                                                          |
[Lights]--<14-2 romex>--<switches>--<14-2 romex>------------------------------------------|

Go ahead. Have at it. Rip this plan to shreds.

Hey, if I were you, I would add an extra circuit to each room. You never know what the future may bring or what a band may bring.

I take it you are using 12AWG spooled wire for the receptacles? Cheaper to run 12/2 or even 12/3 Romex. Just make sure all grounds are accounted for back to the panel. Make you connect to the outlets securely too. All 20amp.

Lights, 15 amp circuits shouldn't be a problem. If in doubt, pick up an Ugly's book at Home Depot. Lots of really great info in there and some stuff you'll never use but is great for party trivia. :P

Your design looks a bit overkill. Unless you have something special planned for the future, skip the conduit (unless is absolutely a necessity) and run Romex.

I'm not so sure it's a good idea to skip conduit. It's code where I live (Chile), and I've come to love the stuff! If you ever have to replace a cable, or run a new cable, you just pull it through the conduit, without having to tear apart your wall to do so! Especially useful when the wall cost you US$ 5,000 and a year to build!!!! :)

I think I'd not only run conduit, but in fact run EXTRA conduit (empty for now), or oversize conduit, for future expansion. You never know when you need "just one more plug / light / mic / speaker / headphone / video / telephone / internet / etc." connection. If you have conduit, properly installed, then its really easy to do. It's really easy and relatively cheap to install conduit now, at the outset, and very expensive / complicated to do it later. An extra few dollars right now can save you major headaches down the road, when you you just have to connect a _____ (fill in the blank).

I've installed and re-installed enough post production suites and equipment in my time to appreciate things like cable trays, cable ducts, and conduit. Especially when the guy who installed them had the foresight to make them bigger than necessary.

OK, I better shut up now. [[[ RANT-MODE=OFF ]]] !!

In the states, conduit is not required in residential homes unless you choose to use it. The Romex suggestion was economic as well as code acceptable.

Stuart's suggestion for conduit to feed tie-lines between rooms is a must. 1" PVC will do the job and leave plenty of space for future in a small facility. Make sure you seal your penetrations.

PS, if you are running Romex through any studs (wood), make sure you attach the protective plates made just for that type of install. Otherwise, you may send a screw right through the Romex and you are then.......well, screwed. Plastic grommets are available as raceways for metal studs.
