...long time listiner, first time caller...

I'm working at a local studio the has a wonderfull control room that sounds great and a recording space that had potential that isn't being utilized.

It's just a big room (36ft. x 24ft.) with a drum riser on one side and a bunch of carpet on the floor. Due to the size of the space I know a lot can be done. The ceeling is also about 10ft. near the walls and maybe 14ft. at the center. It the covered in redwood planks.

I drew up an idea I had (see below) and would like to get any and all opinions I can. There is an office under the studio (when it's marked) and that's where te drum riser WAS but I pointed out that's not a good idea since the floor isn't isolated too much. The owner also isn't too worried about isolation from the outside would. The only thing I forgot on the pic is a double door on the left wall in the "office space" section.

Hi Chris - I assume the area marked as office is in fact on the floor below and that area is part of the whole room?? It's a bit confusing

If you intend to use the midi room at the same time as the recording space you'd need better isolation - a double wall construction.

yes, the office is below. I'm wokring with the owner right now on how isolated the booths should be. He's convinced that standard single-wall construction should do it, I don't agree but it's not my $$!

I'm not worried about feedback concerning isolation at this point. Any ideas about the layout, shape, setup, floor material (wood, carpet...) would be greatly appriciated.

What aobut the slats behind the drum riser? Is that a good idea? I was hopeing to use it's depth to absorb more bass than a typical slat resinator. Will that work?


For isolation, I was thinking of useing a double-wall/double slideing glass door inbetween the iso rooms and the main room.


The drum riser is to isolate it from the floor/room hense isolating it from the office downstairs. Is that dooable?

Chris - I'm not sure I'd put slots there as they are also reflective and you've got enough of that with the two windows. I'd put hangers there to take out the lows, even if it means extending into the room a bit to get even more depth.
