This article offers a simple explanation.

I would not refer to it in a scientific context but it is accurate enough to get a rough feel of the subject.

For a scientific view on speakers and some of their characteristics, see this article instead. A masters thesis on the functions of speakers using a non-linear medium to create sound. It should give you a deeper insight all together.

This same information, and more, can also be obtained by simply applying "speaker linearity" (without the quotes) as arguments to a suitable web search engine.

I am certain that someone else here can offer you a more "hands-on" explanation, should it be needed.
