SIMO Studio - Construction Phase

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Could you please elaborate on that if you get the chance. Grazie
You have a roof with rafters with insulation and then you have sheetrock on these rafters (a coupled wall assembly in effect)'

Then you are framing an interior ceiling which you will hang more sheetrock on.

It would have, if it were possible, better to add the mass directly to the rafters (top side of rafters and possibly mass it up like you would do if this were an overhead floor) and then frame the interior ceiling with sheetrock on the interior side of the newly framed ceiling, in the attempt to make a fully decoupled mass/spring/mass system.

What you have will be effective enough. But if I had it to do again...:)

Hi everyone

Hope you are all well and had a great start of the year !

I haven't been posting on the forum in a while but I have never stopped following it religiously and enjoying all the great builds posted !

Here's an update of my build.
Comments, suggestions, head ups are as ever very welcome !

After the framing of the CR I concentrated on the LR construction:

First some planning with the walls sole plates to check that all made sense …
1-sole plates test A.jpg
1-sole plates test B.jpg
Then my daughter stepped in with some precise measurements
2-little help A.jpg
and art to embellish my gyprock
2-little help B.jpg
…and who said that I don't get any help ! :-)

Framing of first wall (the one opposite side of the splayed one between CR and LR)
3-IMG00302-20110708-1621.jpg
two layers of gyprock
4-IMG00308-20110711-1446.jpg
…going up (really heavy)
5-IMG00318-20110715-1801.jpg
and the first one's up…
6-IMG00324-20110718-1602.jpg
Framing of the second wall done and tested that all fit as it should
I had to split this wall in two parts as it was too wide (wider than my available floor space) to have it on the floor all in one piece and then raise it up like the other ones
7-IMG00335-20110723-1616.jpg
Left and right parts of the wall
8-long wall left part.jpg
8-long wall right part.jpg
I then bolted and screwed the two parts together and started the splayed wall
9-IMG00445-20110929-1829.jpg
... to be continued ...

Splayed wall:
I had to split this wall in two parts as well (bolted and screwed together), again for lack of floor space.
One smaller part is from the edge of the door to the right (inside out construction as usual) and one bigger part is from the door all the way to the left.
This part is the only wall in the building which has plasterboard layers on the inside of the room as it will be a reflective surface (rocks, bricks or similar).
I loosely filled in the gap between this wall and the CR wall with fluffy insulation
10-IMG_0004.JPG
and then placed the rockwool between the studs
10-IMG_0006.JPG
Then I attached two layers of plasterboard, at the present just up to the window.
This is enough for the moment to close that side of the wall where a angled wall with hangers inside will be attached later.
10-IMG_0067.jpg
10-IMG_0073.JPG
For now I prefer to leave the rest of it open and accessible to run electrics and audio cables (well away from each other of course)
Then is the turn of the smaller wall opposite side of the window and near the WC:
11A-small wall.jpg
11B-small wall.jpg
11C-small wall.jpg
Framing of the wall that's around the WC
12-DSC06547.JPG
The stud wall of the WC is already inside that small space…it was a real pain to work confined into that very tiny space…so I'm really glad I'm done with that!)
12-IMG00471-20111013-1556.jpg
Gap between the WC wall and the LR wall
13-IMG00501-20111204-1615.jpg
Loosely filled in with soft insulation
14-IMG00502-20111204-1641.jpg
and then filled the cavity between studs with rockwool
15-IMG00507-20111204-1705.jpg
I attached the usual 2 layers of gyprock on top (no pics) and then tiles will finish it off :-)

... to be continued (again) :-)...

... Next I built the splayed walls that are attached to perimetric ones that will house hangers and slat resonators.
The one on the window was the most challenging one where lots of cuts where required…

Hi Janne,
Thank you very much, very kind of you! I can't wait for my next update as well man!

How's the costruction of your cloud going? I'm sure it will help taiming that poking frequency. Best of luck with it !

Thanks Simo :D
The construction has started and I hope that I can finnish it next week.
It might help, but if that frequency pike is a room mode causing by side walls then it might be useless about that problem...
Anyway, I'm sure it's going to look pretty good :D

Wow! Excellent work Simo and I don't think you could ever have enough pics. Very helpful.
We're you a carpenter before you started this build? If not, you sure are one now.

Keep it up. I'm sure I'm not the only one here living vicariously thru your build until I have the chance to build my own studio.

Hello everyone, hope all is well !

Charlie -> sorry I missed your post..thanks a lot for your encouragement man- it means a lot. you are very kind!
No, actually I've never cut wood before, this is my first time :-) I just religiously followed this forum and tried to apply what I could see, the rest I guess is just desire to have my own space (which who knows if it will ever see the finishing line?!) :-)

Have you started your build? Have you opened a thread?

I finished the framing for the live room ceiling.

Simo - I am not staying in the house I am currently in and since mine will be a personal studio only, I want to make sure it's a permanent situation before I build anything. In the meantime I'm just learning as much as I can from this forum.

Keep the updates coming. Fabulous!

Hi there,

A couple of questions about bass trapping:

These are the two spaces I built at the rear of my control room to house acoustic hangers
IMG_0191.JPG
IMG_0192.JPG
I'm planning of using a 3mm plywood for the core, and 50mm insulation on the sides

Following the distance recommended on John's design, i.e.150-200mm (I assume not from the center of the hangers but from its edge, well not a huge difference anyway), I measured that I would manage to place just three of them in there!
It seems a bit of a waste of space to me, what do you think?
… Actually I never heard them in action so I don't know if three hangers in each side at the rear will be enough?
Would it be better to have a big superchunk instead? or perhaps a combination of the two, i.e. superchunk on the lower half and then hangers on the top half ?

Same thing goes for the space below the speaker soffit
IMG_0193.JPG
IMG_0194.JPG
…as you can see from the pics the space available here is very small, again maximum I will manage to fit three very small ones in there… What do you think of having instead a superchunk with a channel for ventilation made with chicken wire the same way as above the speakers?

Any thoughts much appreciated as usual!

Many Thanks

ciao
