Why can I leave drywall on current ceiling like it is?

Well, you WILL have a three-leaf system, but if you put enough mass on each leaf then it will still work, especially give the size of the air gaps.

Another issue: on the inner leaf, where the drywall on the ceiling meets the drywall on the wall, don't do the joints like that: Stagger them. In other words, first a vertical, then a horizontal, then another vertical, then another horizontal. Not two verticals followed by two horizontals.

how about just one layer of drywall on existing ceiling as in leave whats there and
2 layers on inner leaf?

So just putting another layer of drywall over our existing layer of 5/8ths
Drywall on the ceiling right now is by far the easiest thing to do.
With this approach I would not have to get drywall up above
the original joist (which in my case would be a serious pita)

so just add layer of drywall to existing ceiling (for total of 2 layers on old ceiling)
and then we are going to go with 2 layers of 5/8ths of drywall on the inner leaf with green glue in-between

unless there are objections I'm moving forward with the plan this weekend, got the crew ready for Saturday

we start framing this weekend, so now is the time to shorten the width or length for a more ideal ratio.

any feedback on my room ratio???

I'm kinda bummed on ceiling final height with treatment installed it would be around 7'9" I think.
And I would really have to scrounge every inch I could (bass traps clouds with only a 1 inch gap behind them get me an inch back .... )

so the inside room dimensions from the 2nd layer of drywall without treatment installed is

L 18' 2" x W 16' 2" x H 8' 1"

any feedback is always greatly appreciated

I have looked at these sketchups and if you built it like you are showing, then there may be more issues still to be dealt with.

Can you show us pictures of the actual work?

With a decoupled ceiling in a residential/commercial area you have to include fire stop, it is just not something to leave out for what are obvious reasons to those that have seen and rebuilt burned buildings.

A hip roof has better ability to create the exterior leaf with a lesser amount of sound passage than a gable. Which is not to say that a gable is the "3 leaf of roofs (read=scare)" it requires more attention, often a taller wall assembly works better as far as the exterior walls are concerned, but that is neither here nor there in this discussion.

Hip roof, remove the existing ceiling, fire stop and get us some real pictures to prove that we are working with what you say we are working with.

So Im going to take Drywall off existing ceiling today.
I do recall a few builds where no drywall or plywood or nothing etc
was put above joist and everything turned out ok (as far as acceptable
Isolation). So essentially the hip roof becomes the the outer leaf.

I don't think i can sillicone seal the hip roof either
and I'm wondering if I can't seal roof should I bother with
Sealing walls of outer leaf?
Please feel free to correct me!

I'm definitely going to seal the inner leafs with amazing attention to detail!

ok here's a bunch of pics

today we took out carpet, ripped down drywall from ceiling, bagged up all insulation and cleaned up.

we are ready to build this thing, got to finalize the plan

as you can see the roof I had in sketch-up is not the exact same roof we actually got cause
I was still learning sketch-up and used a temp quick compmonet roof I found.

My question is all about the outer leaf right now... I need someone to break it down for me. I hope I have given enough information
to get the necessary feedback, to get this project moving.

the actual roof of the garage (which corrugated 18 gauge metal) is this going to end up being my outer leaf

is this ok or not?

Now if I can get away with not putting drywall above joist and the current actual roof is going to be the outer leaf, it does not seem practical to get up there
and acoustic caulk as this would be a major under taking, so I'm not going to unless someone objects.

I was told by a friend that I don't need to caulk the roof and to focus my sealing efforts and green glue on the inner leafs.
it seems if the roof doesn't need to be caulked, then the walls of the outer leaf wouldn't make sense either?????

can I just focus my caulking / sealing and green glue efforts on the inner leafs????

Is Butyl caulk a more affordable alternative to acoustic caulk ($4 a tube) for sealing seems?

Ps I'm thinking about raising the current roof truss and creating a vaulted ceiling, I could gain a few extra feet ceiling height this way
good idea or bad idea?

As an exterior leaf..the galvanized metal is thinner than your ceiling would have been, you could have almost left the existing ceiling since it is heavier than this roof

and room ratios etc

I don't think Rod mentions sealing
the outer leaf in his book which was strange
unless I missed it?
