Small garden studio & control room

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Not sure if i had posted about this but awhile back I had some problems with the roof on the studio due to there not enough pitch for a slate tiled roof,

I ended up having to strip all the slates and re cover the whole roof with tyzack roofing membrane to get water tight after experiencing water
coming through a light fitting in the main entrance, thankfully after completely stripping the tyzack off and having the roof re done but with torch on felt 2 layers I am 100% water tight and the roofer who inspected and completed the job said that the osb board was fine.

certainly a weight of my mind, lets hope the sound isolation is no worse than it has been as I have a feeling it will be better than before. :D

Oh no! You made it grey! That's a terrible color acoustically! :) 8) :shot:

Seriously, that looks pretty darn good! Must be good to finally have that issue solved, and be able to move on with other stuff.

What's up next on the agenda? :)

At the risk of coming under fire from you Stuart i am going to carry on in the control room, the music heads have not took the time to work out how to use the REW software and I am the construction idiot as regards to music and computers so ,,,,,

Some more pictures of progress, had ran out of acoustic caulk but managed to get a box of dark grey fire /acoustic sealant from work so cupboard framing all sealed up

It must be starting to sound a bit different in there by now: first impressions?

Well I cant do anything very technical which I have all ready mentioned before, but in the beginning there was an echo or reverb when you clapped or spoke loudly now nothing, I still have the back wall and another corner bass trap to do,

After that I will build a cloud and then cover all the insulation on the walls with fabric, before getting my stepson to come round with the Adam 7X to have a sound check, i will probably still need to make some more wall treatments for the reflection points,

On another note band rehearsals continue for my son, with no problems, still no seals on the doors into the live room yet :(

how ever he gave his first guitar lessons for 2 primary school students in the studio this week with added bonus of some beginners drum lessons, the youngsters were thrilled and the studio was the main talking point in class the next day as one of the students father is a teacher at the school and my son is also a teachers assistant at the same school,

again many thanks for this forum and all the help from viewing of other builds and the moderaters

Have been continuing when I can with the build, below is a photo of the entrance and steps into the control room which have been filled with insulation.
Image

there is the timber treads to put on as yet but I was wondering would it be beneficial for me to drill some holes in the risers say 18mm diameter or so so the steps would end up being something like a broadband absorber of some sorts?

Image

Also to the left of the doorway in the photo the bottom half will be a cupboard for storage but the upper half i was planning on filling with rockwool again and putting wooden slats over with different size gaps between the slats, can anyone offer some advise please :D

I also have to build a hinged corner bass trap that can be swung away from the door when opening and closing the door,
any advise or previous builds done anything like that :?:

I would, yes. Fill those cavities with insulation, and drill some holes so they don't act like drums...

You could maybe even consider using them as a sort of "perf panel" absorber, by drilling the holes in the right pattern and size to treat issues in your room....

Many thanks for the comment back Stuart, I will wait untill the room starts getting used before drilling holes in the steps then,

Some more progress today, had to come up with a way of moving the corner bass trap where the door into the control room is,

Image

here they are fitted,

Image

They swing out of the way

Image

Filled with Rockwool

Image

Finish layer of denser rockwool before material finish

Image

Getting there , still need to hang 2nd door for the control room and then fit all seals and my new threshold seals for all 4 doors

Cool idea! Looks like it is working fine, too. And nice work on those steps, too.

Many thanks Stuart I was pleased that it seemed to work well but I have a bit of a health & safety issue that I have to sort out.

If someone is in the control room with the bass traps swung in front of the door it is impossible to get in the room as the traps do not push out of the way, :(
Just imagine a fire or someone collapsing and being stuck in the room

So I'm going to hang the bass traps on the door, the hinges I have on the door are very high spec but I'm going to add a 4th one as well for a bit more strength with the extra weight, hopefully post some pictures later on.

Hmmmm.... good point: I hadn't noticed that the door swings towards the traps: I was assuming it swung the other way, so yeah, that is an issue. Attaching them to the door sounds like a good solution, but all that extra weight might mean that your seals will need regular inspection, to make sure they are still sealing, and the door isn't sagging.
