would it be beneficial for me to beef it up with a layer of 19mm thick plasterboard and then a layer of 18mm MDF as I have 2 19mm plasterboards left from my studwork and some MDF left, this would make the door around 90mm thick I think?

If you want good isolation, then yes! That would certainly help. Provided that the stud framing was built to handle the extra weight...

The music running in the back ground is the first track they recorded by multi tracking in the control room of the studio,
though at the moment no sound treatment on the walls,
to say they are happy is an understatement with the tracking room getting near to completion
so they can move into there in the next week or so things will get even better,

A big big thank you for all the help from everyone who puts there builds on this forum and to John for this forum,

but especially to Stuart, Brein and anyone else who has pitched in with help

2nd door hung for the tracking room, acoustic firedoor rescued out of a skip a couple of jobs ago,
so not perfect but free



Still need to fix carpet steps, extra door stops and then layer of mdf on each door,
am hoping for really good isolation here with the 2 doors and a 7" air gap between the doors

Starting to look really nice! And I LOVE that mural!

Heres a couple of photos of the first practice in the new room on Monday,

in the control room to listen to how loud it sounds.

Not very technical but the only sound meter I have is Decibel Pro on the iPhone, peak in the room while the boys are playing was 115db,
In the control room while they were playing in the tracking room the peak I got was 58db and this is with the 2 doors on the tracking room
only having some door stop and no seals yet, very happy with that, so again big thank you to Stuart, Brein and anyone else who has pitched in with comments or help, I am half way there, have to put a bit of time in around the house and my front drive as it looks like a building site so progress will slow up i'm afraid.

Just a word to everyone building there own studios on trying to skimp or do things different to advice given by the mods, dont do it, stick to the advice given and you will end up getting there, I live on a council estate in a town in the UK with neighbours all around and am confident enough for the band to practice until 10.00pm on any day in the week, finishing at that time purely for when they leave the house to be quiet for my neighbours.

Oh NOOO! I just saw a huge mistake! Your SM58 is not plugged in...

Yup! Absolutely. Which makes your achievement even more impressive: C weighting takes a lot more low frequencies into consideration, so getting nearly 60 dB of isolation with "C", is something to be really proud of. Congratulations!

Well all I can think is the wall between the tracking room and the control is sand/cement render both sides (except where the natural stone is) on solid 150mm concrete block
with a 110mm air gap filled with insulation, then 18mm plywood, 15mm plasterboard and plaster skimmed

All the other 3 interior walls and the ceiling are 1x15mm stirling board and 2x18mm plasterboard and a 130mm air space filled with insulation

This is actually my first time posting a question on this forum. I've been visiting for a long time now learning a lot from everyone's posts.

Roguejackal you have really done a great job. The pictures looks great!!!

I had a quick question for you in regards to the Drum Riser you built. What are the blue joist mounts you used under the frame? I know those are not U-Boats. Are them something similar? I can't tell from the pictures.

i got them from a job a couple of years back that the client had requested them but then changed there mind they were for a floated floor of some sort, I had planned on using them for the studio but was advised against it, I think I still may have some so il dig them out and let you know what they have written on them.
