Difference GAF Tri Ply & Mineral Surfaced Roof Roll?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Difference GAF Tri Ply & Mineral Surfaced Roof Roll?

Post by corleyd »

I can not find a local supply of GAF Tri Ply. I can find Owens Corning Mineral Surfaced Roofing. The stuff I can find is kind of like roof shingles on a roll 3' x 33', 1 lb/cf and is only ~$10 per roll. It is limp mass. It does have the pebble-type coating on one side. Can I use this between layers of drywall? Safe for interior use? Is it different than GAF Tri Ply? It appears to be much less expensive. Does anyone know the difference?

Thanks,
Dennis

I have been all over the web, including the GAF Corp website. I can find no recognition by GAF or anywhere else but here about a product called GAF Tri-Ply or TP-4. I can not find a description of what it is to know if what I can find is comparable. Any help?

thanks,
Dennis

Hey, Brian Giles - you like this stuff, where'd ya how'd ya why'd ya, etc? Can you clue our man on the stuff? Thanks... Steve

BTW, Corley, I would NOT recommend anything that's petroleum based like roll roofing or building felt for limp mass layers in between wallboard - not worth dying for. You can get just as good results using three different layers of different thickness sheet rock - 1/2 and 5/8 with 3/8 between for one leaf, then 2 layers of 5/8 with 1/2 between, filled with SAFB's or fluffy fiberglas insulation, properly caulked and isolated, and you can't build a door that will keep up with it...
