Panel absorber using limp-mass vinyl instead of plywood?

Post by Guest »

I'm thinking of making a membrane absorber as a broadband bass trap, but instead of using the usual plywood as the membrane, trying limp-mass vinyl (like Auralex's Sheetblok or other companies' vinyl barrier). John, have you or anyone you know tried this? What were the results? I would think it would work like a great big "punching bag" for bass.

Thanks, John, for your reply. Does vinyl work any better or worse than plywood as a membrane? I would expect it to have greater absorption, but does it?

To honest Lee I'm not sure - I suspect it would be a higher frequency than plywood, more like a low-mid absorber. You can test it by attaching a contact mike to it and then firing a sweep tone to it from a speaker and watch on a RTA where it peaks.
