Muddy Speakers

I have a pair of Acoustic research dual woofer speakers, (8 inch). The cabinets are about 24x12x12 inches. They have excellent Bass thump and nice highs, but they are muddy in the low mids which makes spoken words difficult to enjoy and understand. The speakers are 200watt each but are usually used with a 100 watt per channel amp with the volume generally around 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.

is there anything that can be done to make the speakers sound less muddy, such as adding or removing fibreglass. Room treatment is also a possibilty but the total buget for this, plus the already planned room treatment is under $100 (the room treatment is DIY and I already have the fibreglass, so this question is really more as to whether room treatment is going to solve the muddiness problem).

The speakers are about 9 inches from the wall, but moving them further away made no noticable difference. They are placed on a desk, but have been raised off the desk by two inch tall small glass jars to reduce resonance (this also made no noticable difference.

are the speaker high frequency drivers working? what type of room treatments do you have? is you studio 8' x 8' x 12'? is so, the room ratio is going to promote a lot of overlapping modes which will cause response issues...

There are currently no room treatments. I know the room is far from ideal, and it is going to stay that way, I just want to make it better. With the current materials I have, I intend to make six fibreglass version of the acoustifoam cubess...they will not be ideal but I am planning to try them using standards fibreglass tightly folded into cube shapes, wrapped in quilting batton to keep and loose fibres in and then placed inside of some mesh laundery hangers (14" by 12" by 12") Maybe this will cut out some low mid problems. THe room is a bedroom and has a bed with mattress in it, as well as some clothes hanging in a closet which is 8x2x4.

I think the speakers are working correctly as they are two way speakers with dual woofers and the high frequencies sound great.
