Super Newbie Question

Post by Arastar »

Ok, so don't laugh! :)

Last year a friend bought a basic Pro-Tools Set up. Spent a pretty penny on it though. He has given up on even starting to work on it because of time constraints. He's decided to give it to me to give it a whirl. I'm a musician with TONS of recording time under my belt and I've done some engineering but am FAR from proficient.

Here's the deal, I'm heading there tonight to start to work on setting it up...and that's where my problem lies. I'm not sure how the the gear should be hooked up. In what order. I'll list below, as best I can, what I have to work with (it's not much) and hopefully someone can start me on my way.

I have a Power Mac
Pro-Tools TDM software and the Pro-Tools unit
Mics
Cables
Pre-Amp
Powered Monitors
100 watt power amp
Talk Back system

Now I know make and models would be helpful, I just don't have them in front of me. I'm hoping that someone can give me the basic chain of events and I'm sure I can figure it out from there.

Thanks SO much for the help. Any other info that is needed I can get to you guys when I get home from there. I would just like to start and get this in order if possible.

Greetings and Welcome to the site.

First off, if you could update your profile to include city or country you're in, it would be much appreciated.

Second, congrats! You're using a mac. It's all plug and play. Plug in the hardware, per the manual...such as your core card and/or other cards you have, connect the cables to the interface, plug in the power and turn it on. Install the software, and off you go.

When I bought my first system with a mac, it literally took me a maximum of 45 minutes to unbox all the gear, install the hardware, load the software, and I was tracking within 45 minutes.

If this is a new system, and you have problems, digidesign will walk you through any issues, or the company you bought it from (sometimes).

:D
