Replacing drivers in Alesis Monitor II's

Hello,

I've got a pair of Alesis Monitor II's in my B room... I'll accpet condolances later I know they're not great...

Mostly used for Jazz - 20%, Rock -60%, Metal - 20% of the time.

The sound is not great, no highs, no mids... just a big boomy 10" woofer
the Mid is a 5 1/2" with a 4" dome tweeter.

Big dips in the sound at 250hz, 1k and 5k. (crossover points???)
Totally rolls off at 18khz and not very responisve above 16khz...

I'm wondering if these things could benefit from new Peerles (Nomex?),
VIFA (Kevlar?) or Hi-Vi drivers?

Would the crossovers need to be re-done as well?

Or can the cross-overs be shot to begin with hence the bad response?

Worthwhile investment, or just get rid of them???

Well, what you are talking about is redesigning the speaker. Sounds like the x-overs need help anyway. As studio monitors go, the fewer the drivers covering the full frequency range the better. Each x-over point and distance between drivers causes phase problems that are quite audible.
That said, I just reworked a pair of old JBL 4311B monitors. New 3 way constant voltage x-overs and reworked the midrange driver for wider dispersion to match the woofer and tweeter. They sound pretty good for an old set of speakers. The woofer has a couple of resonances that I couldn't correct. Still overall they sound pretty good, way better than original (if you remember that far back).
If you have the skills and time they might be worth foolin' around with.
