Extending ethernet length-in wall installation

Post by Armando »

I'd like to run CAT5 from one wall, over the ceiling and back down to a parallel wall. My CPU/DAW is located on one wall and the control surface(which must connect to the CPU via ethernet(cross-over cable connection) is located on the parallel wall. This is all pre-drywall.

Is this all that needs to be done or are there things I need to be concerned about, like signal strength or type of cabling or connectors. The total distance needs to be around 40 feet.

Thanks in advance!

That length of Cat5 you'll be fine. If you're running pier to pier (from computer to computer w/o a hub) you'll need to wire it in reverse pair (cross over). Otherwise, you'll be ok. Just need some RJ45 connectors and crimpers.

If you ever plan to do more than 2 computers, I'd go ahead and put in a small hub. (They're cheap now days).
