Mic cable, to snake or not to snake.

Post by tommyd1 »

I'm about to order some mic cable for the studio. Any pros/cons for choosing a snake cable as opposed to running individual wires? I was about to order a snake cable, but then thought that if one of the wires inside the snake failed, I'd have to replace the whole snake.

Basically "multi-pair" cable or "multi-core". Same thing.

tommyd1: It is so rare if ever that a channel of a multipair fails. Don't worry about using Multipair. I use it in every studio i design and install and never has there been a problem.

If you are worried run the next size larger and have the spares like if you needed 4 ch run 8 pair

Hi all

A search of snake Vs Cable info leads me here and although J-Lo's rear anatomy is an interesting subject I need some more information. My situation is the same, wiring my new studio and want to use a Mogami or Canare.
Understand the practicalities of cable v snake but my question is more about sound/transmittion quality. is there any degradation in quality between individual cables and Snakes? I.E. will a snake cable perform as well as a bunch of individual cables in a studio installation context.???

Cables are cables, whether bundled or run singularly (is that a word?). The quality of the cable or snake is always dependent upon the characteristics of the individual cable itself either way.

All else being the same (same basic cable type), there is no degradation in qualty between cables and snakes.

Clearly;
