Advice on door in a Brick wall construction project

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Advice on door in a Brick wall construction project

Post by gbosta »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advise on my studio project,

I'm planning a 9x5m studio/rehearsal space on my backyard,
I live in the center of a small village, my neighbor's house is 2 meters away, there's also a gas station and a busy road 10m away,

the concept is a room-within-a room:
outter wall - 11cm hollow brick (2cm mortar on both faces)
insulation - 16cm rockwool 30kg/m3
inner wall - 11cm hollow brick (2cm mortar on both faces)
total thickness of 46cm, each wall and ceilling
floor - concrete slab

I'm trying to achieve close to -70db of sound reduction with this plan,
my question is:

What kind of doors do I need to match the density of the walls? (double door)

thanks,

Bruno

That is a very high soundproof figure. Doors to match that will be specialised studio doors. Roof?

Thanks for your reply DanDan,

the ceilings wil be the same concept as the walls, kinda like the last picture,
I'm planning a rooftop so the outter ceiling will have to be reinforced,

about the doors, I'll have to order them custom made,
I'm looking for guidelines to tell the builder how to make them,

what is the best way to add mass to the doors? (cost/effective)

Sorry I don't understand your roof plan. In any case I just recommend you make it as massive as possible and as damped as possible.
I suspect to achieve such very high levels of isolation it would be best to find DoorSets..... i.e. Frame and Door combined engineered unit.
Rod Gervais book has great build details, plans. 'Build it like the Pros' Also the BBC R&D is a treasure store of Acoustical data researched over decades and decades. https://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/arc ... actice.pdf

Very ambitious, but very cool. I, like DanDan, do not quite understand how you expect to build an outer roof, and an inner ceiling out of bricks. How will the bricks be supported?

You'll have to use two doors, and they'll need to be very heavy. Even then, I expect they'll still be the weak link in your isolation, so you'll need to base your overall isolation needs on what the doors can provide.

Hi,

DanDan, thanks for the BBC book, it is VERY useful,

about the roof:
I'm planning a flat roof,
reinforced concrete t-shaped beams resting on the walls, 30cm spaced apart, holding the bricks in-between, and covered in mortar, (with reinforced steel bars if necessary)

Block-and-beam-.jpg
It will probably need a waterproof membrane in the outer roof,

I hope it clarifies,

Paul, thank you for your reply,
definitely two doors, with at least 10 cm airgap, the heavier the better!
still trying to figure out the best way to address this issue

You are welcome. That is one serious looking roof. I wonder if you might include angles to prevent rain from 'drumming'. Although perhaps you have no idea what rain is!

So you're not using bricks after all, but blocks - yes we call that block and beam, it's an excellent solution.

You could use Onduline bitumen roofing sheets on top, they have in built damping, very light weight and cheap.
