How to soundproof around door jambs?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

How to soundproof around door jambs?

Post by afavreau »

HI,

I was wondering how I should soundproof around door jambs? (see attached image)

My contractor started working on my home studio door today and this is our next step. From what I understand from Rod Gervais' book. We should:
1-Stuff rock wool in there
2-Put Backer Rod on both sides
3-Add acoustic Caulk

On this site though, they recommend Soundproofing rubber instead of Backer Rod.

Soo..

Question #1:
Would Soundproofing rubber be better than Backer Rod? Because it seems comes to about 100$US while Backer Rod seems to cost around 10$

Question #2:
We only have about 1/4" space in there, so how should we approach this? Should we create more space to fit the Backer Rod or Soundproofing rubber? Or is there a better solution?

Question #3:
Is it ok to put shims or is that an acoustic no no? (see attached image)

Thanks for your help

Hi,

We can’t see your image, try uploading it again and I’ll take a look.

The basics of achieving isolation are:
1. air tight
2. maintain surface density

Therefore, around your door, backer rod is fine. Remember, backer rod is literally just there to prevent you from wasting too much caulk. It is very lightweight and therefore doesn't do anything for us acoustically speaking. Caulk has about twice the surface density as drywall, so make sure your caulk is at least half as thick as your sheathing. Shims should be fine as long as they don't "short out" your inner and outer leaves and you have a good seal around them.

I'm trying ton upload a picture, but for some reason, it's not working.

-I go under Upload attachment
-Choose the jpg of only 1,2MB
-Click Add The File
-Then Click Submit.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Greg,

So I think I'll stuff some Rock wool in the middle, add some 3/8" backer rod when it fits and fill the rest with Acoustic Caulk.

Thanks

I believe the file size limit here is 500KB. If you're on a mac, it's as simple as opening the file in Preview, go File, then Export As and choose JPEG. Then, slide the quality slider just left of full quality and it will make your file size under 500KB.
