What Are These Absorbers & What Are They Made Of ???

Post by jskdrums »

Hi gang, I live in Las Vegas & 1 of the big Night Clubs is remodeling & getting rid of some large absorption panels. They measure 8' x 4' x 2" each. The material looks familiar but I'm not sure what exactly it is...The frame is made of a composite of wood shreds that look like spaghetti thats formed into boards...very porous & a bit heavy. I vaguely recall seeing this material in school, maybe in my old band room. Each panel has 2 sections / troughs with a rigid yet porous material that acts as an absorber. It's not foam, but some kind of fiber material appx 1" thick.

Can you identify what materials are used & how affective they may be when used as absorption panels in a live room?

See Pix ;-)

I'm having trouble uploading pix..In the meantime here's a dropbox link to them...

Thanks in advance.

I have seen that stuff before, but I-m not sure what it is. I seem to recall that it is some type of compressed cellulose product, but no idea what the acoustic properties would be.

Sorry!

McDonald's here have ceilings like that. They are tiles of cement impregnated wood shavings.
Celenit is another brand name.
I keep an eye on products, particularly Eco ones. Polyester fibre made from recycled plastic bottles is springing up all over EU and Australia. I have heard of no American version. The absorption figures are probably the best I have seen.
