My Room sounds like Poo Poo!
OK guys. I built this room in my garage. I didn't do it the right way because, I need to be able to sell this at some point in the future. So it is what it is. The leakage to the outside is fine. No problems there.
The problem is, is that the inside sounds like crap. I can get decent guitar sounds, but drums are a no go. Here is how I have the room set up now:
It is about 20 feet by 9.5 feet, with eight foot ceilings.
So what I'm looking for is a way to kill the room. I mean dead. I don't image that it is ever going to really sound good on it's own, so I guess I can go with convolution reverbs for room sounds as long as I can get it dead enough to start with. Right now I have a bunch of 1" wedge foam on the walls, but obviously that isn't doing much.So how would you go about this task.
I'm open to suggestions, if you think there is way to make it sound good.
thanks a lot guys

I started another thread about the woes of installing Owens Corning 703 in my space. Lot's of work because I have a big room, etc.
I was feeling pretty down about the money I had spent and not really getting much change from my monitor system during tests. Tonight I rehearsed with my band and it was mind-boggling how much better it sounded. All over the room I could hear everything clearly and the drums have never been so clear. Wow!
So far I have used 3 of the 4 boxes I bought for the job. It was about $500 US for all of it. In your room half that amount would kill it dead like a hammer. Put it in the corners and around the walls.
Good luck.

Hey Bryan,
I'm in the SF Bay Area. Closer to Oakland in the East Bay.
I had found a place that sold the insulation, but they were really expensive, like $1.92 sq/ft for 2" 703. I think that is almost double what other people have been paying.
But once again, would I have to have them on all walls? Because, at 8" deep x 2 walls, thats almost a foot and a half of the 8.5 feet I have that gets used up. And I forgot to mention that on the wall where the drums are there is external electrical conduit running against the wall about 1 foot up from the floor. is that a problem too? That one would have to be hung to have it work.
Thanks again.

Hey Fucuna, Use Rockwool instead of 703 much less cost.
www.roxul.xom
and send a request for your local supplier.
I would not waste 703 on the inside of a resonator box.
of course I used RHT-40 Semi Rigid Rock wool with coloth covering it too. I am so Frugal. LOL

I sent Roxul a message from their site. But I still have no idea if I need these things all over both of the long walls. As you can see, I have a door that is too close to the wall to put one there. Also I have the electrical that goes along the bottom of the wall on the other side, about 1 foot up the wall. How would you go about dealing with that?
Another question is, can I make these a bit shallower? 8 inches on either side takes up a lot of room in my space. if it was more like 4 inches it would leave me more space in the room, but I don't want to build a useless box either.
thanks again

You live in the Bay Area and you're not used to paying twice as much for everything already?fucanay wrote:I'm in the SF Bay Area..... I think that is almost double what other people have been paying.

Well, not that I know of. I mean housing is more but most other things seem the same. Sales tax is high too, but that shouldn't affect prices before tax.barefoot wrote:You live in the Bay Area and you're not used to paying twice as much for everything already?fucanay wrote:I'm in the SF Bay Area..... You onky be losing 16" (roughly) off your room dimension. A Small price to pay for improved acoustics.
Puts you around 8' wide. Still pretty decent.
I would make sure you had the mix positon covered on both sides, possily just some 2-4" RHT on the right wall, and a resonator on the left wall, with abosorbers on the front and back walls.
