Soffit Mounting and Slanted Ceilings/walls - seeking advice

Post by Mojo Jr »

Dear forum members,

VJ here.

I have a quick question related to a new project studio build (Click this text to see my detailed introduction to the project)

(Also… please refer to the attached images.)

I’m researching several options regarding the orientation of the listening position in an attic space with sloping walls (as outlined in the link mentioned above). One option I’m considering, is to have the speakers soffit mounted along one of the low walls, firing in the same direction as the rising ceiling, toward the peak of the attic ceiling. Here are a couple of questions for anyone who would be willing to take a few moments with me on this.

1.) In a soffit mounted scenario, Is the height of the soffit merely based on the height of the engineer’s chair (and as a result, their ears), or is there some other, acoustic design reason for making them a specific height?

2.) In the scenario above, with the speakers soffit mounted along the short wall, can the top of the speakers be right up against the sloping ceiling (see attached images), or does there need to be some space between the edge of the speaker and the top edge of the soffit panel (where it meets the sloping ceiling)? If so, what would be the prescribed distance from the top of the monitor to the top of the soffit?

3.) I understand the idea that in a rectangular room, with free-standing monitors, there is a certain distance you want to place the monitor to avoid the 50% floor to ceiling null, but in the case of a slanted ceiling, where the monitors are placed in a soffit along the low wall. Is there also some special ratio to consider in the case of soffit mounted monitors?

I’m looking forward to gaining a better understanding of soffit mounting in attic spaces.
