Hi,
First of all this forum is very helpful and I am glad I discovered it. I have spent many hours reading the references section and I gathered a lot of useful information. However I am totally inexperienced in sound isolation and I do not want to learn from my expensive mistakes.
I want to build a small recording studio. I have found a basement in a concrete building with dimensions of 11.8feet*15.7feet and 8.2feet height (360cm*480cm and 250cm height). I will also rent the room above the studio and above that will be residential apartments so I need to soundproof the room as much as I can. I would hate to annoy neighbors. Money is not an issue but space(ceiling height) is. At the moment the room is as it is built, all coated in cement.
(budget=10,000$ for soundproofing only.)
At this point I should mention the floor of basement is not rock solid. If I jump, I can hear that there is some space below the floor. All walls other than pillars are constructed with 9cm hollow bricks coated with cement and pillars and ceilings are bricks filled with cement and iron reinforcements.
I read the canadian STL list and found it best to use concrete with rockwool and empty space however there is not enough head space after this kind of insulation. Ceiling is too low for 45cm of insulation.
Also I will be constructing a floating platform with plexiglass in front for drums in the studio which will not be fully enclosed. I want the drummer to hear himself so that he plays more silent. I also believe this will reduce the low frequency impact sound of kick drum.
I have no experience in soundproofing so I have no idea how much STC means in terms of loud music. There will be drums, trumpet, electric bass and guitars as well as vocals playing simultaneously so I guess the noise level is at least going to be 110 db and I need it to be around 50 db in the third floor if this is achievable in these circumstances.
This studio is going to be in Istanbul. I could not find any professionals for soundproofing in the area and some materials are to be imported if necessary. (compressed rockwool or mlv is hard to find, some types of resilient channels are not available etc.)
This is my first studio project. Most of the studios here are saunas made in basements, and few does not have any kind of soundproofing whatsoever. However they are almost always built in non-residential buildings and they close at 10pm - 00am.
Main question is: How much is necessary?
Should I float the room?
Considering the height of the room, how should the soundproofing be done? (concrete, drywall, wood, plywood, rockwool) in which dimensions?
Considering the recommended overall insulation, what do I look for in doors and windows?
I am sorry for the long post and,
Thank you all in advance!!!
