Small Studio Layout for feedback please

Post by twelvetenstudio »

Hi,
I am nearly ready to start putting my equipment and furniture into my new small studio.

I have attached the layout and treatment idea and would really appreciate some feedback, or do's and dont's

Any advise would be appreciated as I am looking to get started asap.

Many thanks in advance
Andy

Hi Andy, and welcome! :)

That would not be a good layout. Room symmetry is critical for control rooms. In other words, the left half of the room must be a mirror image of the right half, symmetrical around the center-line that passes down the middle of the room. So your chair should be right on that line, straddling it, and so should your head. The speakers should be equidistant either side of that line, and arranged with the correct geometry. Then the room must be treated correctly.

It seems to me that the only way you can get that in your room, is to rotate the orientation 90° clockwise, so the speakers are in front of the windows, then you'll need to place absorber panels between the speakers and the glass: I don't see any other usable layout. Even then it wouldn't be ideal, as the speakers would be firing along the shorter axis of the room, rather than the longer axis, but the room seems to be large enough to allow that.

Hi Stuart and thank you!

Ok I have attached a revised plan.

I guess because the room is near square so it's not ideal, but its cosy and I have no neighbour issues.

Looking at the new layout, do you think there would be sufficient absorbtion on the side walls and back wall?

I'll build the panels using rock wool.

Would it help If I added more towards the now rear of the room, along the side wall and equally opposite on the chimney breast?

Also does the ceiling absorption look enough?

Thanks for your time on this and I would certainly have got it wrong on plan 1! :)

Thanks
Andy

That's a much better layout. Big improvement.

You will need to put very large bass traps in both of the front vertical corners, and also in a few more corners. You will also need very thick absorption on the entire rear wall.

Perhaps, but I would suggest doing the basic treatment first, then test the room with REW and see if you need more absorption.

It's good, but not enough. I would rotate that panel 90°, move it over to the left, then build another identical one next to it, on the right, with the joint between them on the center line of the room. Make those two "hard-backed" panels, and angle them as much as you can, lower over the speakers and higher over your chair.
Thanks for your time on this
:thu: Glad to help!
