Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
That sounds like a good plan, and it should work.
I'd suggest 2" of semi-rigid insulation (50mm), if you are using something like OC-703.

This would be the final layering for the floor. I'm leaning towards 25mm of OC705 equivalent for the fiberglass "padding".

What do you think of this layout?
I ve done a couple of different ray traces keeping in mind i will have the window on my left side angled 7º towards the bottom of the room so i can avoid first reflections as much as possible. I have kept that window small to preserve symmetry.
Regarding the Live room design: Does it make sense to angle the roof towards one of the walls?

It looks good to me!
Live room ceiling: You can angle it if you want, but personally I'd leave it flat and as high as possible, then hang clouds or baffles if necessary to control the acoustics.

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
Thanks, Stuart.
I'm posting a couple of pictures. There are some new developments and details in the design and construction.
The slab is ready!
And the opening connecting the old booth (future C.R.)with the new studio!
I have leaned towards the natural lighting philosophy and added some glass bricks to the eastern wall. I usually start working on the morning (as early as i can) and enjoy the morning light. I will put a layer of laminated glass to compensate the loss of mass.
I'm also considering leaving the original window and putting a big glass outside to retain the natural light and the original Pinewood carpentry.
A view of the actual construction:
I found a big carpenter shop only two blocks away from the studio. He has worked with a couple of Studio designers and understands perfectly what has to be done. He is going to help me with the MDF cuts and installation, and the glass door.
Next week: Floor Fibeglass / Floor MDF Layers / Window Frame /
Thanks Stuart!!

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
I'm back. The last months were very intense. I recorded and mixed about 7 or 8 records since my last post. This made me pause the construction but also gave me some food for my wallet.
I have finished the floor and the drywall. I got some help for both of them. Floors have been sanded and laqued (i don't know if that is the correct term). Walls were painted too!
I'm posting some pictures of the windows before the drywall.
Here is the glass bricks window. I'll put a layer of 5+5 laminated glass on the edge of the drywall.
The big window from outside. I think i will need another 5+5 glass in the inside to achieve the isolation i want.
A look at the 2 windows and the glass door (adapted by the carpenter).

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
Drywall and paint OK. Latest photos.
patio window patio window detail. east window some corner details corner with rainwater drainage sealed The nice curve The nice wooden floor A look at the ceiling-curvewall corner Now i started thinking on what to do with the Acoustical Treatment... I still haven't started deciding so i think i'll make some mobile panels so i can start recording something in there.
Where should i start? Slat resonators? On corners? All around? how much absortion? So much questions!!!!!!
My idea is to keep the room as Live as i can but retaining some control. I'm thinking in lots of wood and diffusion. Given my finished room dimensions (aprox. 3.75m x 3.50m x 3.36m)i think i'll be needing a lot of control on the 90-110 Hz region, also 130-150 hz and around 180-200 hZ. Ill try to do some testing and measurement as soon as possible.
Any initial thoughts?
Thanks

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
Nice work !
For the live 'studio' side ... you might consider some type of 'variable acoustics' treatment.
One idea are hinged panels on the walls. One side is 'soft' [basically fabric covered 703], while the backside is hard surface [wood]. Spaced properly on the wall, the panels can swing on door hinges allowing you to alter the room dry/wet sound.
This opens up so many recording possibilities/creativity.
just an idea to consider.

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
I was thinking exactly that!
My first idea is a big slat resonator and a couple of those panels.
Thanks for the support!!

Re: NEW EXTENSION ON MY OLD STUDIO
Idea development.
2 different Slat Resonators. I was thinking in covering the lowest part of the walls with armstrong panels, maybe with some backing fiberglass. A couple of bass traps in the ceiling-wall corners.
I'm posting various views of the plan.
Hope it makes some sense.
