2" or 4" ceiling cloud

Post by tlsaudio »

I'm almost finished with my room and am wondering if I have made a mistake in my ceiling cloud design. I made a 6X4 box and filled it with four inches of rock wool, a typical cloud design. However, after researching Ethan Winer's real trap site I believe that the early reflection points should be treated with 1 1/4" to 2" absorbers and mine acts more as a broadband/bass trap. Should I take a layer of the rock wool out or just leave it? This cloud is directly over my mix position
Thanks for any help, Terry

Thicker is always better because it gives that much more bass trapping in the room. Thick absorbers are not strictly needed at reflection points, but thicker can only help.

Ethan can you take a look at the pics of my room? I used the diagrams from your http://www.realtraps.com site as a guide to hanging these traps. All four corners have 6'x2'x4" traps, and the area were the ceilling meets the walls have 2'x4'x4" traps. The two traps on front and rear walls have 2" rock wool instead of 4" to help with some HF absorption. And the ceiling clouds are 4x6x4" as stated above. I plan on putting 1" wrapped 703 at the first reflection points. I need to run some tests but wanted to get your input since my gear is not with me right now.

That's not quite right. Thicker panels absorb as much highs as thinner panels, but thicker also absorbs more bass which is a Good Thing.

I'd use two or even four inches thick there. One inch is not enough unless you mount it with an air gap.

Other than that it all looks very good.

Hi im new here and i just thought i would drop by to say i like this layout and plan doing something very similar in my new studio.

i was initially thinking of doing 2'x4'x6" corner traps in all 4 corners ( knauf earthwool rs60 2'' slabs.) and 2'' tri-traps in all 4 ceiling corners

My question is, would it be better to have 2'x6'x4'' corner traps and forget about the ceiling corner tri -traps liek tlsaudio has done?

I hope you understand, this is going to be my first attempt on treating a studio.

looks like an awesome place you have here :D
