Low ceiling - what material to use for my insulation?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Low ceiling - what material to use for my insulation?

Post by FrancescoFiligoi »

Hi there! I'm relocating shortly and my new basement will be used as a control room, here's a quick drawing of how it will look:

As you can see, the ceiling height is already kinda low, 238cm. The room just above this studio is a bedroom and I definitely don't want to bother other people while I'm doing my craft at late night.

I'm searching for something that will cut down dBs drastically to reduce unwanted noise in that room as much as possible, but at the same time something that doesn't take up too much space because of the ceiling height and because I have a window placed 6cm below the ceiling.

I've been recommended lead+plasterboard, are there better alternatives? Something that won't take more than 4cm or 5cm at max.

Thanks for your help and time :)

There are no "magical" materials that can beat the laws of physics, unfortunately. It's not just the materials you use, but also the way you use them. Done properly, two sheets of drywall can far outperform a single sheet of lead of the same total weight....

Search the forum for "fully decoupled 2-leaf MSM", and you'll find many references on how to go about isolating your space. Basically, you need to build a complete isolation system around the room, not just one layer of something massive.
