Hi, I need help on room treatment

Post by chec »

Hi guys, I'm paolo from manila philippines. I have a simple recording rig in my bedroom and i'm thinking of giving my room some acoustic treatment and get a better sounding space for mixing.

***im just looking to improve the sound of my room for better reference, doesnt need to be perfect***

Notes on the sketchup atachment:

1. room dimensions

length: 3.77m (from front door to window)
width: 3.35m (from t/b door to blank wall where the turntables are)
height: 8ft

2. all my walls are painted concrete, ceiling is painted gypsum board, floor is varnished wood parquet, doors are all painted plywood

3. outside my window is the firewall of my neighbor (4.6ft away from my window)

more info:

1. I really dont know much about acoustics except for the tutorials online (and i dont have a measuring microphone to analyze my room). I'm gonna do DIY panels and traps.

2. I will post a picture of my workstation, so you can also see how my speakers are positioned.

3. with the workstation picture, you'll also see what kind of windows i have and the firewall outside.

4. placement-wise i already have ideas where to put the panels, what i dont know are the specs of the panels i'm gonna make.

5. the only available roxul/rockwool here is 2'x4'x2"(thickness) panel and 2'x16'x2"(thickness) roll with different densities.

Concerns

1. with the room i have, will 2" panels do the job for high and mids?

2. i'm looking to build rectangular hanging bass traps for corners instead of super chunks. will 4" (with air gap) do the job for my low freqs?

3. the wall by the bed is directly in front of my monitors. is it advisable to put thick 4" bass traps or 2" will do?

4. the window right behind my monitors: will the firewall outside be a concern when it comes to sound reflection? if yes, is there a simple solution?

5. finally, what densities are advisable for 2" panels and 4" bass traps for my application?

I hope you guys can help out :)

thanks a lot!

Hi Paolo,

There is an announcement at the top of the forum about what to do to assure getting as many responses as possible.
The announcement leads to this post (click here). Actually, several people, who are experts on this forum, will most likely not reply if you don't do what is written in that post. Many others who are very helpful, will most likely not reply out of respect for the moderators' wishes.
2. all my walls are painted concrete, ceiling is painted gypsum board, floor is varnished wood parquet, doors are all painted plywood
OK, that sounds like you should already have reasonably good isolation to the outside, and from what you say it seems like you don't need more isolation, only treatment.
length: 3.77m (from front door to window)
width: 3.35m (from t/b door to blank wall where the turntables are)
height: 8ft
That's good. Those are nice dimensions, so your room ratio is reasonably good.
a picture of my workstation, so you can also see how my speakers are positioned.
First, you need to get those speakers off the desk, and put them on stands behind the desk. If they are on the desk, they cause the desk to vibrate, and they also cause reflections off the surface of the. So buy (or make) two really heavy, solid, massive stands that go just behind the desk, and do not touch the desk, then put your speakers on those. The height of the stands should be just enough that the acoustic axis of the speaker is about 1.2m above the floor. In that size room, the speakers should be about 95 cm from the side walls, which will make them about 145 cm apart, so your chair should be set up such that your heads is about 145 cm from the front wall too.
i already have ideas where to put the panels,
You will need panels at the first reflection points on the side walls and on the ceiling, and you will need panels up against the front wall, between the speakers and the wall. You will also need bass traps in the corners, and panels on the rear wall (above the bed).
5. the only available roxul/rockwool here is 2'x4'x2"(thickness) panel and 2'x16'x2"(thickness) roll with different densities.
That's fine. You can use that: just use two layers for the panels that need to be 4" thick, and three layers for the ones that need to be 6" thick. For mineral wool (rock wool), the density you need is about 50 kg/m3.
3. the wall by the bed is directly in front of my monitors. is it advisable to put thick 4" bass traps or 2" will do?
I would do 6" on that wall.
4. the window right behind my monitors: will the firewall outside be a concern when it comes to sound reflection? if yes, is there a simple solution?
Yes! Keep the windows closed!
