Isolation problem

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Isolation problem

Post by ponkass »

Hi everybody.

I will, in a not to distant future, start to build my own studio, and i have some questions. please have understanding for my english =).

I´ve gotten hold of a room (attic) that is located on the second floor of a youth center. So my main problem is to keep it isolated down through the floor. But also one wall is conected to the youth center.
But my question is concerning the floor.

The floor is a wooden floor. (i´ll have to get back with thickness). Is it possible to float my studiofloor on the existing wooden floor. Is it rigid enough not to "spread" the vibrations to the lower floor?
How would i solve this problem the easiest way?

thankful for any reply

Andy, before we could know for sure what can be done we'd need more information on the existing floor - things like framing size and spacing, span between supports, types of materials, covering types and thicknesses, etc - then, we'd have to calculate the weight of what you want to float on the floor, and find out whether the strength is available for all that.

Please let us know all the details you can find... Steve
