I think I would modify the definition so say ...configuration of speakers which seeks to minimize the effects of the room...

Re: Sunny Ledge Recording Studio - Construction Diary
I agree, and I do so from experience. My last control room ended up being rather small. 7' x 7' yep a square. (pictures above). How I dealt with the myriad of issues ended up being sound absorption all the way around. I made it as flat and "dead" as possible, then opened it up a little by putting some wainscot paneling on the side walls. The entire back wall was shelving full of books.BriHar wrote:I think I would modify the definition so say ...configuration of speakers which seeks to minimize the effects of the room...
The disadvantage, and now that I think about my earlier nearfield comments, was the sweet spot was essentially the only spot. That was probably a function of the room as much if not more than the speakers. The walls, floor ceiling pretty much soaked up the sound. Although it took a lot of patience to get there, in the end it was a pleasure to mix there. I would also listen to a lot of my favorite recordings in there just for research. While the sound was NOT lively, there was a level of detail and articulation that I hope to achieve. Every little nuance of every recording was clear as day. Things that you didn't hear or didn't notice on regular home speakers or in the car.
I also realize I got lucky. A lot of work.. but a lot of luck. I'm not banking on "luck" bailing me out this time...
