"Now do I use Type G or regular drywall screws long enough for 2 layers, with at least 3/8 of an inch into the wood? " -
Neither - Type G stands for Gypsum, as in fastening TO gypsum. For Wood construction, without RC, you would only use Type W (for Wood) - and penetration lengths for wood need to be a minimum of 3/4"; the 3/8" figure is for Type S (Steel) screws, as in RC or steel stud frames.
Several people have posted that they have good luck with the Grabber brand screws, they make each type. You may find them locally, if not try their website -

Home Depot's screws (at least in my area) don't call screws by USG's designators - instead of Type W, theirs just say "for fastening to wood" or something like that.

Steve,
My sincere "THANKS" to both you and Rod, for clarifing the "glue and screw mystery" for me, and I assume, many many others!! Without the generosity and professionalism, the giving of your time and sharing of knowledge, it would take all of us longer to build our studios, and many would be poorly done. I am TOTALLY amazed as to the speed in which you have acted on this.
Gentleman like you and Rod help to restore faith in mankind!!
Steve.... since I don't what you eat for lunch.....may God grant you a week of no gators!
Rod.......I'll take a guess here... for lunch...Starbucks and a box of Marlboro Lights!
Thank you,
Tom
