Comments on Humanspeakers.com?

Post by Rekrapt »

I'm thinking of building my own monitors. I have some JBL Control 1 near-fields... but, obviously would love something more substantial. :)

I found this site: http://www.humanspeakers.com/diy/cabinets.htm. It looks promising to my novice eyes.

I was thinking their 81 series DIY kit might be the way to go.

Their prices for the speaker kits seem pretty reasonable.

Being pretty handy with my power tools ( :) ) but not so knowledgeable about building studio monitors, is this an acceptable alternative to spending thousands on a pair of factory-made monitors for my project studio?

Many Thanks!

the audio DYI forum is pretty good place to get a lot of ideas and plans. I'm concerned about the products you listed because the crossovers seem light:
The crossover used by EPI and HUMAN is just a single ten microfarad capacitor (I'd recommend using a high quality film type capacitor) in series with the tweeter.
but if the cost of DIY was only a couple hundred bucks and worst case they're no better than your Control 1's you're only out some money and time compared to spending several thousands and potentially not getting what you want out of those and have to play swap around etc. for some time until you find the right set up. done correctly, i believe building them yourself would be an excellent project and worth trying.

That's good enough for me, sir. Thanks for responding. I'm going to give them a shot. Maybe I can find a better crossover and use that instead. :)

Thanks again!
